  • David Hoffmann (a Florida-based billionaire from Missouri) will become chair of the company that owns the Daily Record after a $35 million deal secured control of Lee Enterprises, adding fresh leadership to the media firm.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Hickory Daily Record was sold on Dec. 31 in a $50 million deal led by billionaire David Hoffmann, with CEO Kevin Mowbray resigning for a $1.5M payout & Nathan Bekke named interim CEO as Lee Enterprises also cuts interest on $450M in debt.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 130 college scholarships from the North Carolina Community Foundation are now open for students across all counties with free applications and an online match for available aid. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Western Piedmont Council of Governments is hosting Rapid Response sessions for dislocated Kroehler Furniture employees after the facility’s closure. HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, NCDHHS is providing 8,000 free radon test kits (available at radon.ncdhhs.gov) so residents can test their homes for radon, a dangerous gas that can lead to lung cancer.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the High School Basketball Christmas Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 30, Hickory girls finished third with a 48—42 loss to South Caldwell while Hickory boys won the championship by beating Alexander Central 76—55.  WHKY
  • Hickory's boys team was named champions at Dick's Sporting Goods Classic after a competitive event that highlighted local athletic talent. The award recognizes their strong performance during the tournament.  Hickory Daily Record
