EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hickory City Schools will add extra school time to make up for days lost because of snow and ice. Superintendent Jennifer Griffin said the plan protects learning time + considers families' and staff's needs.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Friends of Hickory Public Library is hosting a bookmark contest for K-8 kids to celebrate National Library Week. Participants must submit entries by Tuesday, Mar. 13, with winners announced at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Thursday, Apr. 23, and their designs will become the official library bookmarks.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting next Monday, Feb. 16, 17th Street NW in Hickory will close daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for sewer repair by a private contractor (weather permitting, work is expected to finish by Friday, Feb. 20) as a detour route is in place.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lenoir-Rhyne’s Mackenzie Pringle was named South Atlantic Conference Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time after her triple jump at the Carolina Classic set a new school record (12.24m) and ranked 11th nationally. The honor was announced on Feb. 10.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kellen Gradisar was named the South Atlantic Conference WePlayed Sports Baseball Pitcher of the Week for week two after tossing six innings plus striking out two in a sweep of Columbus St. on Feb. 10.  WHKY
