- ➤ A Claremont man was sentenced to 7 years in prison for his role in a 2023 pursuit that injured a Catawba police chief—Bixby’s body camera footage showed the scuffle, the district attorney’s office said. Hickory Daily Record

- ➤ A Catawba County father won a $320,722 jackpot and will use the prize to pay for his son's education. He said the win is important for his family. Hickory Daily Record
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in Western North Carolina will stop operating as FEMA centers tomorrow at 2 p.m. and will transition to locally operated Resource Centers on March 31. The centers will operate Monday-Friday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and will have FEMA and SBA specialists available to help residents apply for disaster assistance and disaster loans. Go Foothills
- ➤ The U.S. Small Business Administration has extended the physical damage disaster loan deadline to April 27 for businesses, non-profits, homeowners, and renters in disaster-declared counties including Catawba — the change lets affected groups repair or replace storm-damaged property and make mitigation upgrades following a 2024 funding gap. - ➤ On Thursday, Governor Josh Stein issued a State of Emergency to boost the state's capacity to fight wildfires in western North Carolina — officials deployed emergency management, communication, and firefighting teams to support affected counties, and residents were urged to follow local evacuation alerts and burn bans. This move aims to strengthen response efforts as wildfires continue to challenge the affected areas. WHKY
- ➤ On March 26, Governor Josh Stein submitted North Carolina’s Action Plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for a $1.4 billion federal disaster recovery grant after a 30-day public comment period — the plan will focus on housing for low and moderate-income residents and on rebuilding infrastructure and economic development in western North Carolina. The new Division of Community Revitalization, created by his third executive order, has already begun using $120 million in state funds for home repairs. WHKY
