SPORTS NEWS

  • High school baseball games on April 4th brought mixed results across six conferences, with Western Highlands beating Owen 11 to 3 plus Hickory winning 11 to 1 and St. Stephens topping Statesville 15 to 3. In Northwestern contests, Alexander Central won 3 while Ashe County was held scoreless, with other teams reporting varying scores.  WHKY
  • The Hickory Crawdads won their season opener 7-4 against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers Friday night after key hits by Ben Hartl helped drive the scoring. They will host their home opener Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Hickory.  WHKY
  • On April 4th, high school girls soccer games ended with Catawba Valley Athletic 2A’s Bandys scoring 9 against West Caldwell’s 0, Western Foothills Athletic 3A’s Hickory earning 4 while Fred T. Foard logged 1, and Northwestern 3A/4A’s Hibriten finishing with 5 — Ashe County scored 0, South Caldwell 2, Freedom 1, Watauga 3 and Alexander Central 1.  WHKY
  • On Friday, April 5th, Lenoir-Rhyne hit five home runs and won 11—6 over Mars Hill with Cole Stanford hitting two homers and other players adding key hits. The Bears now sit at 81 on the season—one run shy of tying their record of 82 set in 2022—and they aim to break the NCAA DII home run record if they win on Saturday.  WHKY
