CULTURE NEWS

  • Full Circle Arts invites local residents to a reception for its Open Competition exhibition on Thursday, April 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at its downtown cooperative (42-B Third Street NW). The event will feature art judging by Samantha Oleschuk, an intaglio printing demonstration by Matt Strawn, and refreshments.  WHKY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Hickory and the Community Appearance Commission are hosting the fifth annual Green Fest at the Hickory Farmers Market on Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free potted trees, seeds, and plant starts will be offered, and city reps will share tips on recycling, tree care, and stormwater management (helping our downtown stay green).  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Catawba County Board updated the school district merger plan ahead of a public hearing and board vote on April 20 at 7 p.m. at the Justice Center (100 Government Drive, Newton). The revision removes the requirement for board members to resign from boards if they join the interim board.  WHKY
  • On March 31, Attorney General Jeff Jackson joined a bipartisan team urging Congress to pass the Combating Illicit Xylazine Act to reclassify xylazine & help law enforcement track its production.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lenoir-Rhyne football will host Virginia Union on Friday, Aug. 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Helen & Leonard Moretz Stadium to open the season and celebrate 828 Day, replacing the game scheduled against West Florida after the Argonauts moved to Division I.  WHKY
  • On Monday, April 6, high school teams competed in baseball tournaments in Hickory. In the Dick’s Sporting Goods Easter Baseball Classic at Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds, Alexander Central scored 10 runs while Hickory had 7 — games at Patton High, Keeter Stadium and West Lincoln produced varied outcomes.  WHKY
