CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police in Hickory charged two suspects after a shooting occurred early Saturday near the old Party City on Catawba Valley Boulevard — Garron Killian and Kylee Simpson face multiple counts including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Go Foothills
- ➤ 62-year-old Robert Anthony Howse of Hiddenite was arrested Saturday by Alexander County Sheriff’s Officers after he led a slow-speed chase on a riding mower on Sulpher Springs Road & he faces charges for fleeing to elude arrest, impeding traffic, failing to heed blue light and siren, resisting arrest, and possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia with a $4,000 bond, a court date on May 12, and his mower impounded. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute celebrated nine students who completed the Electrical Lineworker Institute at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. The program said classes will begin in June and again in August with limited space and financial aid available. Go Foothills
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hickory is offering two housing rehabilitation programs during Fair Housing Month that help homeowners with low to moderate incomes fix and improve their homes. One program provides loans up to $25,000 with no monthly payments and half the loan forgiven after five years, while the other offers up to $12,000 for urgent repairs. Go Foothills
- ➤ Residents on Linville Street in Glen Alpine have had trouble receiving mail and dealing with higher taxes because their addresses are mixed up with a similar one in Morganton—many must use a post office box to get packages. Local officials say residents may petition the town council to change the street name so that home deliveries and tax records become accurate. The News Herald
- ➤ Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced a settlement in principle with pharmaceutical company Mylan Inc. for its role in fueling the opioid crisis, with North Carolina set to receive about $9 million. The funds will go to state and local governments to help fight the epidemic over the next nine years. Go Foothills
