GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Six months after Hurricane Helene, NCDOT has reopened 90% of damaged roads, repaired over 270 bridges and 870 culverts, and restored Interstate 40 to connect NC and Tennessee — a major milestone for local travel. Crews in Yancey County and Chimney Rock paved gravel paths and will soon replace temporary bridges with permanent designs — public meetings are gathering feedback as recovery efforts continue. - ➤ On Monday, April 7, the Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved $1,415,000 from the General Fund for mobile classrooms at St. Stephens and Balls Creek Elementary Schools. The board also approved a resolution for county participation in state investment pools and authorized the Preliminary Assessment for the Langdon Ridge Subdivision Road Improvement Project. WHKY

- ➤ Starting April 12, the Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department is launching a series of five 5K races at local parks—featuring the new Easter Egg Scramble at Henry Fork River Park and the Aviation 5K at Winkler Park scheduled for May 24. - ➤ The Hickory Crawdads beat Augusta 6-0 on April 8th at LP Frans Stadium in their first Carolina League game as pitchers Kamdyn Perry, William Privette, and J'Briell Easley threw a nine-inning no-hitter in front of (1,303 fans). Pablo Guerrero made key plays and the team will play their first home day game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne's sophomore sprinter Sharonda Priester set a new school record in the 400 meters with a time of 54.50 on April 8th—earning her the title of South Atlantic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week. She also ran a personal best of 24.37 in the 200 meters at High Point’s Vertklasse Invite where she ranked seventh in Division II. WHKY
- ➤ On April 8, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Charlotte Colley was named the SAC Women’s Golf Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award winner for earning a 4.0 GPA. The sophomore from Sheffield, UK studies mathematics & received the honor at the conference championship. WHKY
- ➤ On April 8th, the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears defeated the Catawba Indians 7-4 in a top-25 nonconference game at Durham Field—Cole Stanford’s two-run double tied the game in the 5th inning before additional hits put the Bears ahead; they will travel on Friday to face Carson-Newman in a weekend series. - ➤ The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Golf Team finished fourth at the South Atlantic Conference Championships on April 8, marking their best finish since 2019. Interim Head Coach Justin Hay and graduate assistant Yui Srichantamit led a team that saw a round cancelled due to heavy rain — five Bears finished in the tournament's top half. WHKY
