- ➤ Catawba County commissioners will meet Monday night to consider a plan to merge the three school systems into one. The decision is expected to simplify education services for the county. Hickory Daily Record
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Hickory declared a Stage 1 Low Inflow Protocol on April 16 due to lower lake storage and evaporation. The measure asks customers in unincorporated areas and nearby towns like Conover and Claremont to cut water use by 3-5% through less lawn watering & fewer vehicle washes until notice. Go Foothills

- ➤ On April 17, the #2 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne women’s tennis team beat UVA Wise 4-0 to advance to the SAC semifinals for only the second time in program history. They will face the #3 seeded Wingate Bulldogs Friday (2:00 p.m.) in the next round. WHKY
- ➤ CVCC softball split a doubleheader at Stanford Park (in Hickory) on Thursday, April 16, shutting out Brunswick 8-0 before falling 11-6. The team will face Fayetteville Tech today at 2 p.m. for Sophomore Day. WHKY
- ➤ On Thursday night at LP Frans Stadium, the Hickory Crawdads beat the Salem RidgeYaks 14 to 5 after a four-run fourth inning led by Hector Osorio’s key plays (record 10-2). Tomorrow, Evan Siary will pitch against Salem’s Madinson Frias at 7:00 p.m. WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne’s Alexa Allison, a Newton-Conover High School grad, was named the 2026 SAC Women’s Tennis Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 award winner on April 16. She earned the honor for her academic excellence, holding a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Sports Management, Exercise Science, and Medical Studies for a second straight season. WHKY
- ➤ CVCC shortstop Pierce Bouwman earned NJCAA Division II Player of the Week honors after posting a historic offensive week that included six home runs and a record-breaking season total from April 9 to 15. He and the Red Hawks will play a three-game conference series at Patrick + Henry in Martinsville this weekend. WHKY
