CRIME NEWS

  • A Hickory man on federal probation for a 2019 bank robbery was charged in Lincolnton for a new bank robbery—he already had two previous bank robbery convictions in federal court.  Hickory Daily Record
  • A Hickory police officer involved in a fatal 100 mph chase crash in 2023 faced no charges—local residents say the decision may undermine trust in the judicial system.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Newton Police and Catawba County Sheriff’s Office responded early April 17 to a report of suspicious activity near 7 South Ervin Avenue and stopped a silver Nissan Altima on East P Street—18-year-old Xavier Jahree Wyatt fled into a wooded area after firing at officers and was later caught at Sandalwood Court Apartments with multiple charges pending.  Go Foothills
  • Hickory police are working to identify a man who showed he was armed during a confrontation at Valley Hills Mall, though no shots were fired.  Hickory Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lenoir-Rhyne softball swept a doubleheader on April 18 with a 5 to 2 win in the opener against Carson-Newman and a 14 to 11 win in game two after trailing 11 to 4, with senior Cassidy Wall going 6 for 7, scoring five runs and earning two RBIs. Their sweep and the pregame honor for seniors Cassidy Wall, Katelyn Rackard and Julia Mardigian secured the No. 2 seed in the SAC Tournament — they will host the opening round best of three series starting Friday.  WHKY
  • On April 18, Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball beat Tusculum 8-2 as Sal Carricato went four-for-four with two runs and three RBIs to tie the team home run record—Andrew Harlow pitched six strong innings and allowed only two runs—to snap a three-game losing streak.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse overcame a 4-1 deficit in the first quarter to score nine goals in the second quarter and beat Coker 14-9 on April 18. Joel Brusnahan and Morgan Madish each netted three goals and Jack Burdge made five saves as the Bears extended their seven-game winning streak.  WHKY
