ECONOMY NEWS

  • The last section of track — damaged by Hurricane Helene — has been restored, and a freight train traveled through Old Fort for the first time today. This marks a key step in resuming freight service in the area.  Hickory Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Catawba County will hold a hearing on a school merger today at 7 p.m. at the Board of Commissioners meeting room in the County Justice Center.  Hickory Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lenoir-Rhyne Softball swept the Newberry Wolves on senior day April 19 by winning 5 to 4 in game one and 13 to 3 in game two while holding a one-game lead in the SAC title race and will face Carson-Newman Saturday.  WHKY
  • The Hickory Crawdads came back from a five-run deficit Saturday, April 19 at LP Frans Stadium by scoring seven times in the eighth inning to beat Salem RidgeYaks 13–7, with Morales and Marinaro leading the pitching that secured their ninth straight win.  WHKY
  • Salem Ridge Yaks ended the Crawdads' nine-game win streak with a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon. After Monday off, Hickory, playing as Llamas Copa, will start a twelve-game road trip in Virginia before returning May 5 for a series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne men's golfers Matthew McDougall and Sean Finan were named to the All-SAC team on April 19, with McDougall earning second team honors + Finan receiving third team recognition. Both golfers continue their consecutive conference selections.  WHKY
