CRIME NEWS

  • A Taylorsville man, Kellyn Page Odaniel (23), was arrested Friday after failing to appear on felony charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and cocaine possession linked to an armed robbery on Three Forks Church Road, and he is now held in the Alexander County Detention Center under a $300,000 bond.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Josh Stein announced on April 25 that HUD approved North Carolina's Action Plan for a $1.4 billion grant to rebuild western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. The plan will focus on housing for low and moderate-income residents and fund infrastructure and economic revitalization — pending HUD certification of the state's financial controls.  WHKY
  • Today, Hickory firefighters test hydrants across the service area as part of the city's annual inspection and maintenance program, which will run through the end of May to keep the ISO Class 1 fire rating; residents who see water discoloration should call Public Utilities at 828-323-7427 to flush their water lines.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Hickory Crawdads earned their first walk-off win of 2025 on Saturday night by scoring twice in the ninth to beat the Salem Red Sox 6-5 at LP Frans Stadium — Antonis Macias had two RBIs and Aneudis Mejia pitched the final four innings. The team will face Salem next when Hickory’s Ismael Agreda takes the mound at 2 p.m. on Sunday — a game set to wrap up the series.  WHKY
