- ➤ Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Hickory’s labor force dropped from 172,035 in March 2024 to 170,417 in March 2025 — a decline of 1,618 workers — marking the 16th straight month of decrease as baby boomers retire. Local experts add that hiring challenges in health care and fewer young workers entering the job market will continue to affect the region. Hickory Daily Record

- ➤ Hickory City Council will meet Tuesday night (May 6) at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at 76 North Center Street to consider code changes including adjustments to speed limits on Fairgrove Church Road and 2nd Avenue NW and a new backflow prevention program. The meeting will also review plans for work at the US 70 and 4th Street Drive SW intersection. WHKY

- ➤ Hickory FC defeated Mint Hill FC 6-1 in an exhibition match at Moretz Stadium on May 4. The team will begin its National Premier Soccer League season at Charlottetowne Hops FC at 8:00 p.m. Saturday. WHKY
- ➤ The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse team earned the #4 seed in the South Region and will host #5 seeded Wingate on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. — the game will be played at Moretz Stadium. WHKY
- ➤ The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears beat Carson—Newman 12—3 on May 4 and advanced to a three-game SAC Championship series at McCrary Park—where they will face top-seed Catawba. Game one is set for Friday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m., game two for Saturday, May 10 at noon, and a third game will follow if needed. WHKY
