COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Hickory Police Department & officers from Conover, Newton, Maiden, Long View, & Catawba County Sheriff’s Office run in the Torch Run for Special Olympics today. The run begins at 9 a.m. from HPD headquarters, moves east on 2nd Avenue SW & includes stops at City Hall, Sails on the Square. Go Foothills
- ➤ Letter carriers in Hickory will collect non-perishable food donations tomorrow for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive — a 30-year national effort that has delivered over 1.82 billion pounds to local pantries. Residents are encouraged to leave a can or box outside their mailbox for pickup. Go Foothills
- ➤ Mountain View Karate Center in Hickory will host an open house Saturday (May 9) from noon to 5 p.m. at 1273 16th Street NE. The event features karate demos, a bounce house, games, DigNDogs hotdogs and barbeque, face painting and more. WHKY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Catawba County agencies and organizations will host a month-long series of Juneteenth celebrations this June, including live music in Conover on June 19 and a festival with library discussions and line dancing at local branches on June 20. The events honor the history of freedom and unity. WHKY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ten community colleges statewide launched the Careers Electric Training Network to boost 20% enrollment in Electrical Systems Technology programs over the next three years. Each participating school — including recognized local campuses — will receive up to $250,000 for curriculum, recruitment, and student support measures. Go Foothills
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Catawba Valley Health System will take over and rebrand the remaining Mountain View urgent care sites as Catawba Urgent Care of Mountain View — part of a plan to streamline local health services. The new brand will be introduced soon. Hickory Daily Record

- ➤ M/I Homes is building Tennison Crossing, a 191-home development on 62 acres at 2211 Robinson Road (about a mile from a Target shopping center). The project will add new housing options to the local market. Hickory Daily Record
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4-2 Wednesday night at LP Frans Stadium with Aidan Deakins pitching soundly and crucial sixth-inning home runs from Hector Osorio and Daniel Flames, and the team will face a pitching matchup at 11am tomorrow. WHKY
- ➤ Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department will partner with Lenoir-Rhyne University to present the Summer Track Series on Thursdays, June 4-25, from 6-9 p.m. at the LRU outdoor track at 625 Seventh Avenue Place NE where participants will compete in a range of events to earn age group awards. - ➤ At the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Matthew McDougall and Sean Finan finished round one on May 7. McDougall scored 73 (1 over par) and Finan got 75 (3 over par) before a long rain delay; both will tee off for round two tomorrow. WHKY
