CRIME NEWS

  • A Hickory woman was convicted of felony aggravated death by vehicle, driving while impaired and driving while license revoked (sentenced to 6 to 8 years) for a 2024 crash (that killed a 19-year-old).  Hickory Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Josh Stein announced a new $55 million state program that lets local governments in western North Carolina apply for grants to repair public infrastructure needed by small businesses hurt by Hurricane Helene. The grants, which can be up to $1 million each, will be given on a first-come—first-served basis.  Go Foothills

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frye Regional Medical Center has launched a community survey for residents in Catawba, Caldwell and Burke counties to share their health needs and help set local priorities — the survey is online until May 20, and hospital leaders will review the results to plan improvements over the next three years with a focus group scheduled for July and report findings later this fall.  WHKY
