CRIME NEWS

  • 51-year-old Randall Scott Setzer of Preach Drive was arrested on May 10—charged with possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, a firearm by a felon, and resisting a public officer—and he is held at the Catawba County Detention Facility under a $35,000 bond with a District Court hearing scheduled for today.  WHKY
  • 41-year-old Robert Peter Vogt from Charlotte was arrested on May 10 by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers and faces charges in Catawba County for felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle as well as two counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in Mecklenburg County—he is held on $20,000 bond with a Catawba County District Court hearing scheduled today and a Mecklenburg County appearance set for May 13.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burke County school board is considering spending $675,000 on land for a new elementary school that will have a big auditorium, a big gym, an independent football field, and maybe two baseball fields—plans meant to boost facilities for Hildebran and Icard students.  The News Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, high school girls soccer playoff games start with area teams competing in 2A, 3A and 4A — the announced matchups include Hickory taking on North Iredell in 3A, Bandys hosting Wheatmore in 2A, and Alexander Central hosting Page in 4A.  WHKY
  • Local high school lacrosse playoffs in 1A/2A/3A begin today as girls from St. Stephens face North Davidson and Patton meets Community School of Davidson while the Hickory boys team has a first round bye and will face West Stokes in the second round — officials expect these matchups to shape upcoming rounds.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne's softball season ended on May 11 when North Georgia defeated the Bears 6-4 at the NCAA Regionals. The game was halted by rain on Saturday (score tied at 2 in the third) and resumed Sunday morning with North Georgia scoring four runs to win.  WHKY
  • On May 11, Lenoir-Rhyne baseball lost 10-4 to Catawba in the SAC Championship as Hogan Stallings hit a key two-run home run in the second inning. The Bears will await their NCAA Tournament placement during Sunday night’s selection show at 10:30 p.m.—they made their fifth championship appearance seeking a third NCAA Tournament entry.  WHKY
  • The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Golf team ended their season on May 11 by tying for 12th in the tough Southeast Regional & they shot rounds of 300, 293 and 283 to finish with an overall score of 876 tied with Lander. Sean Finan led the team by tying for 13th in the individual standings & his scores of 70, 74 and 70 helped the Bears climb five spots on day three.  WHKY
