EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alexander County Board of Education approved $700,000 to renovate Sugar Loaf Elementary School’s media center on May 12 + the funds will come from half of county sales tax collections.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Catawba County is proposing a $345 million budget for the next fiscal year+ the plan increases education spending with a lower per pupil raise than before while keeping property taxes unchanged.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Improvements to the parking deck on Trade Alley and First Avenue NW in downtown Hickory were completed yesterday—allowing the deck to reopen for public use. The deck had been closed since February 17 for maintenance and necessary repairs.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three local basketball players were named to the North Carolina East-West All-Star rosters for July contests. Peyton Caldwell from Freedom and Braelyn Stilwell from East Burke will play in the women’s game—starting at 6:30 p.m.—while Raheim Misher from Maiden will join the men’s game at 8:30 p.m. on July 21 at Greensboro Coliseum Novant Health Field House.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne’s men’s and women’s track teams will head to national championships in Pueblo, Colorado from May 22 to 24 after eight athletes were named—a group that includes freshman Havyn Spain in the 400m and Oliver Thatcher in the Decathlon on the men's side and Alexis Brown, Damyja Ortiz, Miranda Marr plus relay teams for the women. The athletes qualified with strong performances at the SAC Championships and will compete in a series of events showcasing top talent.  WHKY
  • CVCC baseball advanced to the Region 10/South Atlantic District championship with three wins last weekend at Burlington Athletic Park — the victories came over Bryant & Stratton in 12 innings, Fayetteville Tech in 10 innings and Brunswick 4-2. The championship game is set for noon Friday after weather moved the remaining tournament games to Burlington.  WHKY
  • On May 10, 2025, Hickory Motor Speedway held the Catawba County Oasis Shrine 100 where Michael Bumgarner swept both NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Models races, Billy Snodgrass won the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models and Jacob Hayes won the Super Trucks race — John Reynolds, Jesse Martin and Sheflon Clay won their races during the event.  WHKY
