CRIME NEWS

  • James Wallace Jernigan—known as Milkbone—was arrested Friday May 16 in Catawba County on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony larceny of a motor vehicle, while a 15-year-old with him was found safe and he is set to appear in District Court Monday May 19.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Challenger Early College in Catawba County graduated 90 students with 98% earning associate degrees. Plus, 76 graduates will enroll at a four-year university including Yale University.  Hickory Daily Record
  • At the May 10 spring commencement at Holmes Convocation Center, two graduates from the Hickory area were honored. Cullen earned an interior design degree and runs Form and Function Co., planning to get her certification + grow her business, while Dameron, a first-generation health care management student, said her family support + school mentors helped her succeed.  Hickory Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 17, a record five Lenoir-Rhyne baseball players were named to the NCBWA All-Southeast Region teams with Mackenzie Wainwright becoming the first LR player to be named Region Player of the Year—he set a new school record with his home runs while teammates Cole Stanford, Owen Blackledge, Sal Carricato, and Andrew Harlow also earned regional honors.  WHKY
  • On May 17, Coach Sam Clarke said eight Lenoir-Rhyne tennis players were named to the Academic All-District Team for earning a 3.50 GPA and playing in 90% of matches. Runa Muderrisoglu from the women’s team was named a finalist for Academic All-American honors and advanced to the national ballot — a win that shows her strength in both school and tennis.  WHKY
  • The Hickory Crawdads beat the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 5-4 with a walk-off win in extra innings on May 17 at LP Frans Stadium. Pablo Guerrero scored the winning run on a bad throw from Kannapolis reliever Liam Paddack — giving the team its first extra-inning win this season after two extra-inning losses.  WHKY
  • On May 15, high school girls soccer playoffs saw Elkin lose 1-0 to North Carolina School of Science and Math, ending their season at a 14-4-1 record, and Newton-Conover win 4-0 over North Surry to advance the Red Devils to host Forbush on Monday—Patton beat West Stokes 1-0 to send the Panthers to play at Pine Lake Prep. In 3A, Hibriten beat Enka 3-0 so the Panthers will host Hickory, Hickory beat Oak Grove 7-5 to send the Red Tornadoes to Hibriten, and St. Stephens beat A.C. Reynolds 2-0 to advance the Indians to face Atkins—schedules for the next rounds are to be set.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne football head coach Doug Socha said the Bears will travel to Georgia to face Valdosta State on October 4, replacing their game with Limestone. The finalized 2025 schedule also lists an opener at West Florida on August 29 and a home opener versus Emory & Henry on September 13—completing next season's matchups.  WHKY
