CRIME NEWS

  • 32-year-old Nathan Lee Thomas of Noah Path was arrested in Conover on May 17 and is charged with breaking—entering, larceny, obtaining property by false pretense, and injury to real property; his court date is set for today.  WHKY
  • A Hickory man involved in a police standoff in Conover escaped on Thursday but turned himself in Friday — he now faces charges of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Felony Larceny of a Vehicle with his first court appearance today while a 15-year-old was found safe at a residence following a tip.  Go Foothills

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball beat North Georgia 11—3 on May 18 by hitting five home runs and advanced to its first NCAA Super Regional— the Bears will travel to Salisbury where they will face Catawba in a best—of—three series starting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.  WHKY
  • The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series after defeating Bryant & Stratton 22-3 on May 18 at Burlington Athletic Park—marking their third trip to nationals and a season record for wins. Head coach Marshall McDonald said the team will travel to Enid, Okla. to compete in the upcoming series.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne scored 13 runs with 17 hits in a 13-7 win over Belmont Abbey on May 18, moving on to the Regional Finals. Hogan Stallings went 4-for-5—earning three RBI to boost the Bears' win.  WHKY
  • The Hickory Crawdads lost Friday's contest to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers at LP Frans Stadium after Kannapolis built a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Maxton Martin hit an early home run for Hickory — giving them a 1-0 start — but steady pitching from Justin Sinibaldi and two relievers helped Kannapolis secure the win.  WHKY
