CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested 26-year-old Winston Eccleston for first-degree kidnapping after 29-year-old Sadie Tolley, who has ties to Hickory, went missing from the Emma community in January—she later provided key information at the Waynesville Police Department.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bunker Hill High School held its 2025 graduation where students received $6.3 million in scholarships—many saying they are not sure what comes next. The event marked a milestone for the graduates as they prepare for future challenges.  Hickory Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hickory city offices and the public library will be closed Monday for Memorial Day while the Hickory Solid Waste Division will keep garbage and recycling on schedule; city offices will reopen Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.—other regional offices will also close or adjust services.  Hickory Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 24, 2025, Jose Escobar’s RBI single broke a 6-6 tie in the 11th inning and gave the Myrtle Beach Pelicans an 8-7 win over the Hickory Crawdads at LP Frans Stadium—Maxton Martin added two runs.  WHKY
  • The CVCC baseball team improved from a 9 to 9 record and won 34 of 41 games to clinch the Region 10/South Atlantic District championship, earning its third trip to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. Coach Marshall McDonald said the Red Hawks, seeded 11th, will face the No. 6 East Central team on Saturday — they plan to win their first national title.  WHKY
  • The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball team won game two 6—3 on May 24 as left-handed pitcher William Girardi threw eight innings and Cole Stanford hit a home run that brought three RBIs. The win forced a winner-take-all game scheduled for tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in Salisbury that will decide a berth in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.  WHKY
