  • The building that housed the Hickory Daily Record was sold for $1.9 million—bought by a health care real estate development firm—and the newspaper staff will move to a new location in town.  Hickory Daily Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Hickory man Bryan Flowers (53-year-old) was charged with bank robbery after allegedly robbing Peoples Bank in Lincolnton on April 17 by force and intimidation as part of a federal operation that charged 18 individuals for several types of criminal activity.  WHKY
  • 48-year-old Jonathan Ashley Kiser from North College Avenue in Newton was arrested by Long View Police Officers on charges of felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of marijuana (one-half to one-and-one-half ounces) and possession of drug paraphernalia and was held at Catawba County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond with a District Court date set for today.  WHKY
  • 33-year-old Ashton Markese Mayfield of Ogborn Lane in Hudson was arrested by Hickory Police on felony counts for possession of a schedule I drug, failing to appear on a schedule II count, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer on May 28—and he was jailed at the Catawba County Detention Facility with a bond of $16,000 and is set to appear in District Court in Newton tomorrow with a Superior Court hearing on July 7.  WHKY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report from the North Carolina Department of Commerce Labor & Economic Analysis Division showed that unemployment rates in the Hickory metro area fell in April, with the local MSA rate dropping to 3.4 percent from 3.6 percent in March and the state’s rate decreasing from 3.7 to 3.4 percent.  WHKY
