CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities held a news conference on June 1 near Walnut Acres Drive in Catawba County after a mass shooting left one person dead and eleven injured, including one in critical condition — the deceased was identified as 58-year-old Shawn Patrick Hood while local and state investigators worked to determine a motive with no arrests made.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hickory Police Department is focusing on Hwy 127 from 29th Avenue Drive NW to 1st Avenue SE for June’s traffic enforcement P.A.C.T. – Pay Attention in City Traffic. Officers will target red-light violations–distracted driving–speeding and remind road users to follow traffic signals for safe travel.  Go Foothills
  • North Carolina will receive $415 million from a $1.5 billion federal disaster relief package, with over $400 million set aside for Helene road repairs, as Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy will announce Wednesday through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program (the funds will support quick repairs to roads, bridges and other infrastructure).  Go Foothills
  • A public hearing will be held at Tuesday’s Hickory City Council meeting (June 3) to review the 2025-2026 Fiscal Year budget that totals $159,075,833 for city operations, capital improvements, and debt service, and includes a recommended property tax rate increase from 45.5 to 46 cents per $100 of assessed value plus adjustments to water and sewer charges. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Julian G. Whitener Municipal Building.  WHKY
  • Today at 7 p.m., Catawba County Commissioners will meet at the Board of Commissioners meeting room in the Catawba County Justice Center in Newton to review a revised 2025-2026 fiscal budget that lowers funding—from $345,000,797 to $338,705,936—and includes changes such as a reduced Newton Fire District tax rate; a special meeting will be held Monday at 6:50 p.m. to adopt the Annual Southeastern Catawba County Water & Sewer District Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-2026.  WHKY

  • On Saturday night, Hickory FC entered the game as heavy favorites and reached a 1—1 tie at halftime against Burlington United after the coach rotated several starters following a midweek game. In the second half, Martin Juanche scored a key goal that opened the way for five more to help the team win 6—1.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne Head Baseball Coach Adam Skonieczki was named National Co-Coach of the Year by Perfect Game on June 1—he became the first coach in school history to win the award as his team set a Division II home run record and ranked in the top ten in nine offensive categories while advancing in the championship series.  WHKY
