COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A funeral procession and memorial to honor Hickory Firefighter Jake Bridges, who died on June 5 at age 20, will be held today. The procession begins at 8:30 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Service on 7878 NC 16 in Newton and the memorial starts at 11 a.m. at the Hickory Metro Convention Center — the family requested no media coverage and advised drivers to plan for traffic delays.  WHKY

CRIME NEWS

  • 51-year-old Midian Ronteze Smith from Nuway Circle NE in Lenoir was arrested by Conover police today on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle — driving while license revoked and open container after consuming alcohol, and he is held at the Catawba County Detention Facility under a $12,000 bond with a District Court appearance scheduled today.  WHKY
  • A Catawba County woman was found guilty of causing a fatal vehicle crash in 2024—victim's family testified in court with remarks that their loved one now 'dances in the streets of glory and sits with Jesus.'  Hickory Daily Record
  • Christopher Durand Myers, a 45-year-old homeless man from Newton, was arrested Tuesday, June 10 on charges of attempted common law robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal contempt, misdemeanor larceny, and resisting a public officer (he is held without bond in the Catawba County Detention Facility and his District Court date is set for today).  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hickory Public Housing Authority filed a lawsuit against Nu Dimensions—operator of 311 low income apartments—saying the organization owes $278,183.99 for funds advanced to pay vendors from September 2023 until early this year; the suit was filed on June 6.  WHKY
  • Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced a settlement with the N.C. Rate Bureau today that sets a 5% statewide increase in automobile insurance rates—17.6 percentage points lower than the bureau’s request. The settlement also decreases motorcycle liability premiums by an average of 16.3% and will take effect on new and renewed policies starting Oct. 1, canceling the Sept. 22 hearing.  Go Foothills
