CRIME NEWS

  • Nine people were arrested after more than 50 shots were fired into a pool party on Walnut Acres Drive in Mountain View on June 1 that left 11 injured and one dead—law enforcement said more arrests are likely.  The News Herald
  • 23-year-old Kenyan Malik Jackson from Samanthas Wells in Newton was arrested on June 13 by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers on charges of possessing a stolen firearm—he is now jailed under a $2,500 bond with a District Court date set.  WHKY
  • Kody Chayce Leigh, 28, of Midnight Drive in Claremont was arrested on June 13 by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers and is charged with false imprisonment, assault by pointing a gun, assault on a female, and interference with emergency communications—he remains in custody at the Catawba County Detention Facility with a District Court date scheduled on June 13.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Catawba County commissioners will propose merging Catawba County Schools with Newton-Conover City Schools at their board meeting on July 21 — the resolution is expected to set plans for combining the two districts.  Hickory Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Hickory Crawdads lost 3-2 at Myrtle Beach on June 13 when the Pelicans won on a walk-off balk in the bottom of the ninth. Maxton Martin hit a first-inning home run and Dalton Pence pitched three innings as the team fell to a 30-29 record in the first half.  WHKY
