- ➤ The Rotary Club of Hickory in partnership with the City will dedicate a Peace Pole at Miracle of Hickory Park at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27 to promote peace and unity. Rotary President Nat Auten, Mayor Hank Guess, and Service Chair Susan Smith—speaking at the event—will address the crowd as the pole displays the message 'May Peace Prevail On Earth' in eight languages. - ➤ Starting Monday, July 7, WHKY Radio will begin its morning shows earlier with First News airing at 5 and 5:30 a.m., followed by First Talk from 6 to 9 a.m.—On Second Thought will continue from 9 a.m. to Noon as the station marks its 85th anniversary. WHKY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 16, the Newton-Conover Board of Education passed a resolution opposing a proposed merger with Catawba County Schools—community members had voiced their opposition after officials indicated that a forcible merger would be considered in July. WHKY
- ➤ The town of Hildebran says a company selling train cabins is in violation of zoning rules by not obtaining a permit—officials said the property owner was informed of the zoning requirements before buying the property and was encouraged to comply. The News Herald

- ➤ On June 16, the Hickory Crawdads split a doubleheader with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by winning the first game 12 to 2 and losing the second 4 to 1. They are 31—31 for the season and will begin a six-game homestand today—hosting the Delmarva Shorebirds at L.P. Frans Stadium. WHKY
