CRIME NEWS

  • Michelle Wilshire, a 50-year-old from Hickory, was sentenced yesterday to 46 months in prison and two years of supervised release for embezzling over $900,000 from a family business in Conover — she misused debit cards and checks to withdraw funds between 2016 and 2021.  WHKY
  • Charles Rodell Kincaid III, a 27-year-old Burke County man from Morganton, appeared in court Tuesday, June 17, in Newton on a charge of attempted first-degree murder for his role in a mass shooting on June 1 in Mountain View where one person died and eleven were hurt (he reportedly drove gang members to and from the shooting) while he remains at the Catawba County Detention Facility without bond (his lawyer said he admitted helping plan the attack).  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 16, more than 80 community members and school board members met to oppose a plan to merge Newton-Conover City Schools with Catawba County Schools—board members unanimously passed a resolution against consolidation, while county officials plan to present a merger resolution on July 21.  Hickory Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced today that 55 attorneys general signed on to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to address claims linked to the opioid crisis. North Carolina’s state and local governments will receive nearly $150 million over the next 15 years to support addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery—local governments may join pending bankruptcy court approval.  Go Foothills
  • On Tuesday, June 17, Hickory City Council recognized retiring Police Chief Reed Baer for 30 years of service and approved the FY2025-2026 budget of $159,075,833—up from the previous year—while also moving forward with a rezoning petition and Community Development Block Grants plan. The council received an update on the Public Housing Authority, which has filed a lawsuit seeking $278,183.99 from Nu Dimensions for funds advanced to low-income housing, as part of its regular session actions.  WHKY
