- ➤ Investigators revealed that suspects planned a mass shooting at a Catawba County pool party on June 1 that left one man dead and 11 injured, and search warrants showed that Garon Killian—charged with attempted first-degree murder—fled to Charlotte and later contacted a county deputy. - ➤ 62-year-old Debra Lynn Steiner from Saw Mill Road in Conover was arrested by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers on June 19 on a felony warrant for money laundering and grand theft above $100,000 from Sumter County, Florida — she is held without bond at the county detention facility with a District Court appearance set for June 23 in Newton. - ➤ The WPCC Audio & Video Production program received the Mark Ivester Innovation Award for its focus on streaming media content & training students from Burke County and beyond. The program was launched in fall 2024 and continues to prepare students for future careers in media. The News Herald

The Business Development Committee will meet Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. while the Regional Planning Commission convenes at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers — both set to discuss city planning efforts. - ➤ On June 20, the Hickory Crawdads lost 5-4 at LP Frans Stadium when Luis Almeyda doubled home two runs for Delmarva in the eighth inning—pushing the visitors to a come-from-behind win. The team had taken an early lead with a home run from Marcos Torres and runs from debutant Devin Fitz-Gerald before pitcher Dalton Pence allowed three runs in the final inning—ending the first half at a 33-32 record. - ➤ LR men's golfer Holt Allison was named to the PING All-American Honorable Mention team by the GCAA on Thursday and earned All-Southeast Region and All-SAC First Team honors as he helped lead the Bears to a second straight NCAA Regional finish—placing 12th out of 20 teams.
