  • A Catawba County man followed his brother’s advice—buying a scratch-off ticket that won him $100,000.  Hickory Daily Record

CRIME NEWS

  • 29-year-old Quintin Latrell Abernathy of Hugh Hoffman Mobile Home Park in Hickory was arrested Wednesday, June 25, by Probation & Parole Officers on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle and violating parole—he is held on a bond under $3,000 and faces a District Court hearing today.  WHKY
  • 40-year-old David Wayne Edwards from Oak Ridge Church Road in Connelly Springs was arrested this morning by Long View Police Officers in Catawba County and charged with felony breaking & entering, breaking & entering to a motor vehicle, parole violation, resisting a public officer & disorderly conduct; he was held on a bond of $7,500 with a District Court date set for today.  WHKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Catawba County board chair said the county is not moving forward with merger plans for Newton-Conover and county schools as officials review student needs and costs—further details have not yet been shared.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Hickory City Schools hired a firm to create plans to renovate or replace Hickory High and will seek grant money for the project—steps that will guide future improvements.  Hickory Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the first measles case for 2025— the case involves a child who visited Forsyth and Guilford counties after traveling from a country with recent outbreaks. Burke County Public Health advises unvaccinated residents aged one year and older to get the MMR vaccine for protection.  WHKY
