CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Catawba County man 42-year-old Jeffery Allen Bortz from Claremont was arrested in Alexander County on felony larceny of a motor vehicle after being released from prison on July 7 following 41 months of incarceration — he is held on a $10,000 secured bond and will appear in district court on July 14. - ➤ Hickory Police arrested 60-year-old Revonda Kay Smith from Central Avenue in Granite Falls on July 9 for felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance and drug paraphernalia—she is now held in the Catawba County Detention Facility with no bond—and her District Court date is scheduled for today. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The City of Hickory will offer its free Neighborhood College program this fall to teach local government through 10 weekly sessions on Monday evenings—from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—starting Sept. 15, with a graduation on Nov. 18 and an online application due by Aug. 15 for one of 30 spots. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 1, NCDMV announced that Governor Josh Stein signed Senate Bill 391 to set a moratorium on the expiration of Class C driver licenses—licenses expiring on or after July 1 will remain valid for driving in the state for up to two extra years. The moratorium stays in effect through Dec. 31 and does not apply to commercial or suspended licenses. WHKY
- ➤ Gov. Josh Stein signed the Neighbor State License Recognition Act — a law that eases licensing for professionals from South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia by automatically recognizing their credentials if they meet North Carolina standards. The law aims to reduce workforce barriers and will take effect Oct. 1. Go Foothills
- ➤ The N.C. State Health Plan’s board of trustees approved changes that will raise health insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays for about 300,000 state employees in 2026—employees will learn the final amounts in August and more details will come before Open Enrollment on Oct. 13—31. The changes aim to address a $507 million deficit and help stabilize the plan’s finances. Go Foothills
