CRIME NEWS

  • Hickory police arrested James David Houser, 30, on murder charges for the July 4 case when Mary Elizabeth Ervin, 30, was found dead by a gunshot at Deluxe Inn on Hwy 70 SW — he is now held at Catawba County Detention Facility with no bond.  Go Foothills
  • 41-year-old Amy Lynn Scott of Claremont was arrested Tuesday, July 8 — charged with felony counts of methamphetamine possession, maintaining a place for controlled substances and a misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia — and she is held at Alexander County Detention Center on a $20,000 secured bond with a court date set for next Monday, July 14.  WHKY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Free Saturday Screenings return to Hickory this summer as the City of Hickory Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Department hosts family-friendly outdoor movie nights at 8:45 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of July and August with films including Indiana Jones, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Sing and National Treasure. July events will be held at Lowes Foods City Park Parking Lot while August screenings take place at Union Square (visitors may bring blankets, lawn chairs and enjoy concessions and games).  Go Foothills

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hickory Police Department is focusing on 5th Street NE between 26th Avenue NE and 10th Avenue Drive NE for July's Pay Attention in City Traffic campaign—targeting violations of red light, distracted driving and speeding. Motorists are urged to yield to pedestrians and bicyclists who must obey all traffic signals to keep roads safe.  Go Foothills
  • A new NC law now allows speed cameras in school zones, imposing a $250 civil penalty per violation—fines will not add insurance points to drivers' records.  The News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Catawba Valley Health System and Urgent Care of Mountain View held a ribbon-cutting on July 8 at the Belle Hollow shopping center in North Hickory—expanding care options for illnesses, injuries, and work-related health needs across local clinics.  WHKY
  • Today, Catawba Valley Medical Center was designated as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Disease Society of America & the honor recognizes the hospital’s efforts in improving antimicrobial use to treat infections and reduce resistance.  WHKY
  • Frye Regional Medical Center added six new inpatient beds to its Behavioral Health unit on July 9 to help meet rising mental health needs; the move increased the unit’s capacity to 77 beds for patients (18 and older).  WHKY
