GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Monday’s meeting, Catawba County commissioners discussed easing overcrowding by shifting students to Newton-Conover City Schools — a plan prompted by a McKissick study that showed rising enrollment pressures in county schools. Chairman Isenhower said the county might request a similar study of Hickory City Schools to explore options before new construction drives up taxes. Hickory Daily Record
- ➤ The North Carolina State Board of Elections started its Registration Repair Project last Thursday to collect missing driver’s license numbers or the last four digits of social security numbers from about 103,000 voters—officials say the project uses a dedicated website, county record checks, and mailed letters in early August to update voter records for future ballots. County boards will also mark records so voters who miss providing the numbers must vote provisional ballots. WHKY
- ➤ The Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution for Bay Pointe subdivision that confirms the Final Assessment Roll, authorizes assessment collection, and sets a public hearing to follow with property owners to be notified. They also approved a Final Assessment Resolution for the Wellington Subdivision Road Improvement Project + scheduled further steps including a petition for NCDOT to accept the roads. WHKY
