COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newton’s Corner Table is launching its annual Parade of Cans Food Drive from August 1 through August 31 to collect food and donations for its Community Kitchen and Backpack Program. The group also received a new cargo van from City Council—purchased with Community Development Block Grant funds—to help support its work.  WHKY

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 14, Hickory police responded to reports of shots fired at Keating Pointe Apartments at 1123 Second St. SE—charging a 19-year-old from Lenoir with murder.  Hickory Daily Record
  • The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office responded to an officer-involved shooting on Bolick Lane in Bethlehem on July 24 that led to the street being closed while the SBI assisted with the investigation, with no injuries reported and the nearby Catawba Valley Medical Center Family Practice scheduled to open later that day—patients were urged to call ahead.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Catawba County will purchase the old Mountain View fire department building for $800K to serve as an EMS base—this purchase comes as the fire department builds a new station.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced that Gilead Sciences will pay $202 million to settle claims that it provided kickbacks to doctors for promoting its HIV drugs—North Carolina Medicaid will receive $760,106 from the settlement reached through a multi-state qui tam lawsuit. Investigators found that Gilead’s internal controls failed to stop kickbacks paid from January 2011 to November 2017.  WHKY
