ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fatal crash occurred on Friday, August 1 near I-40 west in Catawba County when a 2024 Subaru Ascent collided with a 2019 Honda HR-V during heavy rain, killing 22-year-old Gabriella Elise Cruz from Bryson City and injuring an Apex resident and three passengers—authorities are reviewing the case for possible charges as traffic was delayed for about two hours.  WHKY

CRIME NEWS

  • A Newton man, 48-year-old Tyrus Terrill Sanders, was sentenced to serve 20 to 26 years and fined $1.5 million on July 31 after a Catawba County jury found him guilty of trafficking fentanyl during a four-day trial at Catawba County Superior Court — his habitual felon status enhanced the sentence —.  WHKY
  • On July 30, 41-year-old Melissa Marie Hollifield from Park Avenue in Morganton was arrested by Hickory Police on charges of felony obtaining property by false pretense and misdemeanor simple possession of a schedule III controlled substance; she is held at the Catawba County Detention Facility on a bond under $5,000 with a District Court appearance set for August 21.  WHKY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Public Art Commission will gather at Taft Broome Park on August 13 at 5:30 p.m. to dedicate a new 8.5-foot sculpture honoring Harriet Tubman—crafted by Vandorn Hinnant with plans for future interior lighting.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eddie Marlowe, a retired law enforcement veteran who served as a police sergeant for 25 years in Long View, filed his bid for mayor on August 1 and plans to campaign in every part of town before the November 4 election. He said he will work to improve public transportation, boost the local economy, and increase community engagement + he currently works at Hickory Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Department coordinating community events.  WHKY
  • The Town of Long View announced Justin Reid as the new Chief of Police effective August 1. Reid brings 15 years of law enforcement experience, having served as a patrol officer, K-9 handler, and deputy chief—he will lead a department focused on community safety while Dennis Hardin and Davey Anderson earn promotions to Major/Deputy Chief and Operations Captain respectively.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On August 1st, the Hickory Crawdads lost to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 10-5 on the road after scoring five runs in the fifth before the Woodpeckers answered with eight unanswered runs. The Crawdads are 53-45 overall — they will wrap up the series this weekend before hosting the Columbia Firefly next week at L.P. Frans Stadium.  WHKY
