CRIME NEWS

  • On August 4, 2025, Nicholas Eugene Bollinger from Valdese pled guilty to trafficking opium/heroin and received a sentence of 70 to 93 months after a Burke County investigation uncovered narcotics and firearms at his Leger Road home—32-year-old Emily Clawson was also charged in connection with the search.  Go Foothills
  • Police in Catawba and Burke counties are investigating a string of counterfeit $100 bill cases in Hickory, Valdese, Newton and Granite Falls. Hickory police reported four cases at local businesses over the past week and authorities released photos of suspects in Valdese—public tips are being urged as the investigation continues.  Go Foothills

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Green Room at the McCreary Theatre will host 'Songs for a New World' for one weekend only with performances set for August 14–16 at 7:30 p.m. and August 17 at 3 p.m.—all proceeds will benefit the Michele Acosta McCreary Education Fund in memory of Michele Acosta McCreary.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The N.C. Department of Transportation was nationally praised for its response to Hurricane Helene—winning the 'Best TSMO Project' and 'Best Overall Winner' awards—by coordinating road updates and emergency support. The agency sent over 2,000 employees and used its flood-warning system to help areas hit by the storm.  WHKY

  • On August 7th, LR Swim Coach Vic Riggs announced Danny Berlitz would join as a graduate assistant—bringing his 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials experience and record-setting background at West Virginia to help mentor future swimmers.  WHKY
  • Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball head coach Emry Tsitouris finalized her roster for the upcoming season on August 7—she joined from Mars Hill. The new team features experienced players and fresh talent, and fans will meet the group during the dinner on Wednesday, September 17th at 6:00 p.m.—the event will be at the Bears Club Pavilion.  WHKY
