CRIME NEWS

  • Two Caldwell County men (36-year-old David Glen Roberts Jr. of Hickory and 51-year-old Johnny Shane Biles of Rhodhiss) were charged with felony larceny after allegedly breaking into a construction site at 300 Burke Street and stealing over $10,000 in equipment, while investigators recovered about $8,480 and set each bond at $10,000 with a court date on September 11th.  WHKY
  • 30-year-old Adam Morgan Paist from 2nd Street NE in Hickory was arrested Saturday on charges of breaking and entering with intent to terrorize or injure, domestic criminal trespassing, and property injury—he is held without bond and faces a District Court hearing today.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • 17th Street NW in Hickory is closed today from Second Avenue NW to Seventh Avenue NW from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for installing water and sewer taps—detours are in place and work is expected to finish by Sept. 5 if weather permits.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tri-County Motor Speedway hosted the Doug’s Glee & Auto Glass 265 event Saturday night where Graham Hollar won in the late models, Chase Pollard won in the limiteds, Klint Townsend won in the renegades, Nathan Franks edged Gary Ledbetter in street stocks, Jamison Whittington won in the mini stocks, Skylar Brown won the Front Wheel Drive series, and Jacob Hickman won in the crown vic division. Races will resume on September 6 with multiple classes including outlaws and Carolina vintage series.  WHKY
  • The Hickory Crawdads, playing as the Malmo Oat Milkers, scored four runs in the first inning to secure an 8 to 1 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats at LP Frans Stadium on Saturday night—Yolfran Castillo had three hits with three RBI while Gavin Fien made his professional debut with an RBI triple.  WHKY
  • Michael Bumgarner won both 40-lap late model races at Hickory Motor Speedway Saturday and extended his points lead in the series — while Kyle Barnes, Josh Goble, Cody DeMarmels, and Jimmy Mullins won in the limiteds, super trucks, street stocks, and super stocks respectively — and the track will host the 49th annual Bobby Isaac Memorial with late models running 150 laps along with limiteds, street stocks, and pro late models.  WHKY
  • On August 24, the Hickory Crawdads won 9-8 over the Lynchburg Hillcats at LP Frans Stadium—Gavin Fien scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to clinch the win. Marcos Torres and Pablo Guerrero helped the team secure the series win before they head to Columbia for a six-game set starting Tuesday.  WHKY
