CRIME NEWS
- ➤ WHKY Radio today announced a partnership with King & Rowe, Attorneys at Law to provide legal insight during its Crime Report segment as the firm will explain local laws and court procedures for Hickory listeners. WHKY
- ➤ 23-year-old Malachi Nathaniel Hopper of 13th Street Place NE in Hickory was arrested on August 27 by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers and charged with assault by strangulation, assault on a female, false imprisonment and assault by pointing a gun — he is held at the Catawba County Detention Facility with no bond and is scheduled for his district court appearance today. - ➤ 45-year-old Joseph Lee Sawyers from Lenoir was arrested Sunday, August 24 in Taylorsville — he is charged with felony embezzlement and violation of habitual felon status from Catawba County and will appear in Catawba County Superior Court on September 29. WHKY
- ➤ Johnny Shane Biles, a habitual felon from Hickory, pleaded guilty in Catawba County Superior Court on August 25 for breaking into storage units on January 17 and using a lost or stolen card, and he will serve 7 to 10 years in prison under the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections—his sentence reflects past convictions from 2000, 2004, and 2007. - ➤ Eighteen-year-old Jahleal Zymeriion Armstrong of Fairway Drive SW in Conover was arrested on August 27 for breaking into a motor vehicle and is held at the Catawba County Detention Facility under a $3,000 bond—his District Court hearing is set for today. WHKY

- ➤ Attorney General Jeff Jackson took steps this week to protect children online from deepfake pornography and AI chatbots that engage in harmful conduct with underage users. He joined a group of 44 attorneys general on August 25 and with 47 others today—demanding stronger safeguards from tech companies, search engines, banks and payment platforms—to help block harmful content and exploitation online. - ➤ The Hickory Crawdads lost 11-2 to the Columbia Fireflies on August 27th on the road as Esteban Mejia and Yolfran Castillo each went two-for-four and Marcos Torres hit a solo home run. The loss dropped their record to 30-25 and left them 8.5 games behind the division leader with 11 games remaining as they will play Columbia on the road this week before concluding the season at home.
