CRIME NEWS

  • 38-year-old Tiffany Ann Hammonds of 28th Street NE in Hickory was arrested yesterday by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers on charges of two counts each of break or enter a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny, along with a count of possession of stolen goods—she was jailed on an $11,000 bond with a court date set for Thursday.  WHKY
  • 31-year-old Jessica Amber Lennox from Springs Road NE was arrested on September 2 by Hickory Police for trafficking methamphetamine and MDMA — she faces multiple felony charges and will appear in District Court on September 11 and 22 while held at the Catawba County Detention Facility on a $52,500 bond.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hickory Police Department is enforcing the 'Pay Attention in City Traffic' plan on Falling Creek Road NE for all of September — it checks for distracted driving, speeding, and unsafe following while urging both drivers and pedestrians to be alert.  WHKY
  • North Carolina Governor Josh Stein signed an executive order Tuesday to boost the state’s artificial intelligence efforts by creating an AI Leadership Council, an AI Accelerator, and oversight teams in every state agency—The council, led by Teena Piccione and Lee Lilley, will guide policy and training while helping state operations adapt to new AI projects.  WHKY
  • Hickory City Council met Tuesday, September 2, where Mayor Hank Guess presented a proclamation honoring Hickory FC after its championship win and recognized the Public Housing Authority Commissioners. The council approved its consent agenda—featuring a $73,717.92 contract change for a road widening project, a resolution for opioid settlement funds, and a regional housing update from Western Piedmont Council of Government.  WHKY
  • Catawba County Commissioners met Tuesday, September 2 in regular session and approved six consent agenda items, including accepting $1,000,000 in grant funds for Lake Norman Woods wastewater treatment upgrades and revising county code for parks. They also rejected the sole bid for the Blackburn Waste Processing Facility Relocation project—authorizing the County Manager to execute the required grant and engineering service agreements.  WHKY

  • On September 4th, the Lenoir-Rhyne women’s soccer team came back from a 2–0 deficit to defeat the Bears 3–2 with a game-winning goal in the 87th minute—coach Justin Maullin made his debut on the field.  WHKY
  • On September 4, the Hickory Crawdads defeated Charleston 6-3 at LP Frans Stadium with two-run homers by Marcos Torres and Esteban Mejia that powered a strong bullpen effort. The team scored early and secured its second straight win as they prepare to take the mound on Thursday at 7 p.m.  WHKY
