ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Carolina State Parks said on September 15 that Mount Mitchell State Park reopened after Hurricane Helene. The Blue Ridge Parkway also reopened from milepost 382 in Asheville to milepost 355.3 near the park—though some trails and facilities remain closed, so visitors should check updates before visiting. WHKY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Early voting begins today for the City Council Ward 5 primary election in Hickory, where five candidates including incumbent David Zagaroli, Arnita Dula, Kevin Gaylord, Joshua Ledford & Taylor Lelewski are competing for two council spots. About 5,000 ward voters in downtown, northwest Hickory, Viewmont & parts of Burke & Caldwell counties can cast their ballots, and Primary Election Day is October 7. WHKY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball swept Anderson 3-0 on September 17 to open South Atlantic Conference play and earned their first full sweep over the Trojans since 2013—head coach Nicole Barringer improved to 4-0 in conference openers. The team now ties the all-time series at 18-18. WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne athletics released the basketball schedules for the upcoming season — the women’s team, led by first-year coach Emry Tsitouris, will open at home on November 15th and 16th during a Peach Belt and South Atlantic Challenge. The men’s team, coached by Brent Owen in his second year, has a tough schedule featuring games against NCAA teams and tournaments including the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Florida. - ➤ On September 17th, Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute’s volleyball team beat Cleveland Community College in a tight five-set match. Freshman Lyrical Edwards led with 18 kills, and the team will play its next match Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Hudson. WHKY
- ➤ On September 17, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Golf Team opened its season by finishing 14th out of 16 teams in the NCAA DII South Regional Preview with a score of 944 which was 80 over par. Transfer Danielle Bekker led the team with two rounds of 75 and they will compete in the Savannah Lakes Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Monticello Golf Club in McCormick. WHKY
