- ➤ Today the City of Hickory held the Ward 5 primary election — five candidates competed for two positions in the November election as about 5,000 voters cast ballots in precincts across downtown, northwest Hickory, and Viewmont. Polls were open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and early voting will begin on October 16. WHKY
- ➤ Laid off and furloughed federal workers can apply immediately for NC jobless benefits via the state Division of Employment Security website — applications are filed online at des.nc.gov. Hickory Daily Record
- ➤ Attorney General Jeff Jackson warned North Carolinians today about scams exploiting the government shutdown. Scammers pretend to be from federal agencies to steal personal and financial details—residents should ignore suspicious calls and emails and report them to his office. Go Foothills
