- ➤ The Town of Long View will host its annual Fall Festival on October 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Long View Recreation Center (3107 2nd Avenue NW) with local vendors, food trucks, games, inflatables, and family activities, and visitors should expect some traffic delays along 2nd Avenue NW. - ➤ Meals on Wheels of Catawba County needs volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors. A training session will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 (1:30-3 p.m.) at the main office at 507 Boundary St. in Newton. Hickory Daily Record
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hickory City Schools released a statement on October 20 opposing the planned merger of the three county school systems—officials say the change would raise costs and disrupt students. Community members are urged to join a public meeting today at Cornerstone Church in Maiden from 6—8 p.m. to learn more about the proposal. WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne inaugurated its first woman president during homecoming weekend. Since joining on July 1, McGee has introduced initiatives to enhance college access and affordability — and started a strategic plan for the university. Hickory Daily Record
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reminded Medicare beneficiaries to compare and update their plans during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which began on Oct. 15th and will continue for eight weeks until changes made by Dec. 7th ensure coverage begins on Jan. 1, 2026. He advised residents to call a local SHIIP counselor for free help + guidance on finding better Medicare options. WHKY
