- ➤ A benefit concert is planned on November 8 at Exodus Missionary Outreach United Church of Christ in Hickory to honor Rev Susan Smith as she fights metastatic breast cancer following her surgery and ongoing treatment at Duke Breast Cancer Clinic. The free event (featuring gospel choirs) will run from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and include a raffle (raising funds for uncovered treatment costs). WHKY
- ➤ Veterans from Caldwell and nearby counties will attend the Foothills Veterans Winter Stand Down at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir on November 13 - doors will open at 8 a.m. and the main event will begin at 9 a.m. More than 40 resource providers will offer free breakfast, lunch and essential services, and shuttles are available by calling 828-464-9444 by November 10. - ➤ The Hickory Riverwalk bridge reopens today after being closed for electrical repairs—officials confirmed that the fixes keep the structure safe for public use. Hickory Daily Record
- ➤ The Sherrills Ford Lions Club donated over 2,000 items to an elementary school—Lion Wanda Felt said the donation will help each child start school with confidence and a readiness to learn. Hickory Daily Record
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Educational state forests switched to winter hours on Nov. 1 — they now open Tuesday through Friday and close on weekends and state holidays — while ranger-led classes remain available by reservation amid maintenance projects. Go Foothills
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne University's first woman president—who marked a new chapter for the school—outlined plans to upgrade campus programs and add a pinball attraction while promising to share the school's story with a wider audience. Hickory Daily Record
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hickory’s Riverwalk overwater bridge will open today at 8 a.m. for bicyclists and pedestrians coming from Hickory City and Rotary-Geitner parks—while the trailhead parking at 1580 Old Lenoir Road NW remains closed due to OLLE Art Walk construction. WHKY
- ➤ The City of Hickory announced it will begin curbside leaf collection on Nov. 10 and run until Jan. 16, 2026, with different zones receiving two rounds of pickup. Residents should place leaves in approved containers (32-gallon containers or clear plastic bags) and wait for their scheduled start. Go Foothills
- ➤ The City of Hickory is accepting nominations for its annual Beautification Awards Program until Nov. 28. Residents may submit entries with a photo to honor properties improved through landscaping, renovation, restoration — nominations must be for properties within city limits. WHKY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On November 6, the Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer team won 2 to 1 against the Catawba Indians as Raul Canas put the team ahead and Daniel Martinez scored the game winner in the 84th minute. The team will play in the SAC tournament opening round Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Hickory. WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Soccer ended their regular season on November 6 with a scoreless draw against No. 3 Catawba Indians — the tie left the Bears one point behind Catawba in the South Atlantic Conference standings, and they will face seventh-seeded Wingate at 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the SAC Tournament. - ➤ CVCC men’s basketball opened its season on November 6 with a 142 to 85 win over the Lees McRae developmental team at the Tarlton Complex — the game marked the second highest total in program history. The team returns for the CVCC Classic on Friday and Saturday to build on its strong start. WHKY
