EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education announced Dr. Emily Shaw as the new Superintendent at its meeting on November 6 (meeting date) and she will begin her role on January 1 (start date), replacing Dr. Aron Gabriel who will head Mayland Community College.  WHKY

SPORTS NEWS

  • App State Football rallied for three touchdowns in the last 20 minutes but fell short as Georgia Southern held on for a 25-23 win at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Thursday night. AJ Swann threw for 348 yards + Jaden Barnes had 160 yards as the team missed the chance to complete a comeback win.  WHKY
  • High school boys soccer playoffs on Thursday produced several winners advancing to the third round on Monday. Hickory beat East Rowan 9-0 + will host Atkins, while North Carolina School of Science and Math-Morganton, Patton, West Caldwell, Hibriten, Newton-Conover, and Alexander Central also won their matches as some teams saw their seasons end.  WHKY
