EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The CVCC Foundation announced today it received a Duke Energy grant to begin planning a new Sherrills Ford campus that would expand higher education and workforce training opportunities. The grant will fund key documents like site plans (and cost estimates) to guide future development. WHKY
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Frye Regional Medical Center completed its 100th TAVR procedure (a minimally invasive heart treatment) today, marking a milestone for its heart program launched in July and earning national awards for excellence in care. WHKY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Dec. 10, the Bears won 78-72 over Catawba thanks to Aaliyah El’s 31-point effort and key free throws that sealed the game. The team (now 5-3 overall) will travel to face UVA Wise on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. WHKY
- ➤ Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute volleyball freshman Lyrical Edwards earned NJCAA Division III First Team All-American honors on Dec. 10 as she tallied 336 kills and 410 points to propel the Cobras to a 22-10 record (Draughn grad). WHKY
- ➤ On Tuesday, Dec. 9, local high school basketball teams competed in the Western Foothills 4A/5A Conference + in Hickory, the girls scored 54 and the boys scored 94 while other schools posted results in both conference and non-conference matchups. WHKY
- ➤ App State Baseball unveiled its 2026 schedule Wednesday with 22 home games in Boone (Smith Stadium) and 5 at Hickory. Season tickets are on sale now, and the season opens on Feb. 13 against Canisius at L.P. Frans Stadium. WHKY
- ➤ Hickory Motor Speedway announced its 2026 schedule, shifting the Leapfrog Lawncare & Landscaping Late Model Stocks to NASCAR Division II with 11 races while naming the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models as NASCAR Division I contenders. The venue will host ARCA Menards East Series and Monster Truck Wars (828-464-3655). WHKY
