GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Hickory received a $45,302.52 Hometown Grant from T-Mobile to upgrade the West Hickory Senior Center, which will get a new roof and HVAC replacement to improve energy efficiency and safety, city officials said (Warren Wood). WHKY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne women’s basketball set a 22-year scoring record by beating Mars Hill 111-78 at Shuford Arena on Saturday, Dec. 20, with Aaliyah El scoring 26 points plus the team marking its 21st consecutive win at home. WHKY
- ➤ Two Bears players, Tye Roberson and Desmond Greene, were named to the Don Hansen All-America Team on Saturday, Dec. 20. Roberson earned first-team honors after setting a record with 41.9 yards per kick return — while Greene received an honorable mention and was named to the All-Super Region Two Team. WHKY
- ➤ Friday's high school basketball games saw local teams compete in both girls and boys divisions with scores including 59 for Hickory girls and 75 for Hickory boys, and results from other schools reported (Dec. 20). WHKY
- ➤ Lenoir-Rhyne senior Emmaleigh Allen was named the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year as she posted 304 digs and 246 kills while earning a 3.95 GPA. The announcement recognizes her excellence on the court & in the classroom. WHKY
- ➤ CVCC won on Friday with a 94-93 finish at the Tarlton Complex after Levi Robinson hit a three-pointer with 4.6 seconds left. TJay Mills scored a career-high 31 points — the team will face Fayetteville Tech at 3 p.m. next Saturday. WHKY
- ➤ The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears defeated Mars Hill 115-65 on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Shuford Arena, with Akili Evans scoring 24 and Junior Hodnett tying a record with seven steals — a performance marked by strong teamwork. A Celebration of Life honoring coach John Lentz will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at the same arena. WHKY
