BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kroehler Furniture in Conover is laying off workers today as it will close on Jan. 1 (its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy which caused a major drop in business).  WHKY
  • Queen Transportation, a local trucking firm with 89 trucks, closed over the Christmas holiday after notifying staff on Dec. 25 and 26, leaving about 90 workers unemployed — FMCSA records still list the company as active.  WHKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 6 and Jan. 7, 2026, Hickory will close the westbound lane on Eighth Ave NE from Highland Ave NE to Eighth St NE for tree trimming while limiting eastbound to one lane. Crews will work from (8:30 a.m.) to (3:30 p.m.) daily with a detour.  WHKY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Catawba County Medical Center set new visitor rules due to rising respiratory illness; effective yesterday, children under 13 could visit only if receiving care and siblings may visit at the Birthing Center—visitors were limited to one in the Emergency Department and two in other areas.  WHKY
  • Catawba Valley Medical Center has set new visitor restrictions today due to a rise in respiratory illness. The updated policy limits the number of visitors per patient and specifies acceptable age groups.  Hickory Daily Record
  • Following CDC approval, NCDHHS reaffirms new hepatitis B vaccine guidelines that urge providers to ensure infants are vaccinated at birth and, if missed, begin the series at two months — vaccines are available at local health care sites.  Go Foothills
  • A Hickory veteran uses acupuncture to offer traditional healing methods that address patterns of pain rather than one specific ailment. He draws on his Air Force experience and now serves community members looking for alternative wellness options.  The News Herald
